Are we there yet? Ag teacht chun deiridh….ach liosta fada rudaí le déanamh

Is fada an lá ag teacht ach ar deireadh táim ag teacht i dtreo dheireadh an PhD. Níl fágtha ach coicís agam sula leagfaidh mé isteach dréacht iomlán den tráchtas. Roimhe sin, áfach, tá liosta mór fada de rudaí atá fós le déanamh agam. Cuireadh an blag seo mo threo ar maidin ina dtugann bean óg cuntas ar conas atá sise ag dul i ngleic leis na dúshláin atá le sárú sna seachtainí deireanacha.

Sink or swim…cuir cuma an mhisnigh ort féin

Lynch_Justin--Terrapins-Swim-Team-

Tá sé tamaill ó chaith mé súil ar an leathanach seo agus níos faide go fóill ó scríobh mé aon rud fiúntach. Ach, iarradh orm ar maidin cúpla focal a rá mar gheall ar an mblag agus an fáth ar shocraigh mé ar pháirt a ghlacadh ann an chéad lá riamh. Cuir sé sin ag smaoineamh mé agus an chéad rud a rinne mé, mar a dhéanaim go minic na laethanta seo nuair a bhíonn in amhras céard le déanamh, chuaigh mé caoldíreach go dtí Thesiswhisperer. An chéad rud a tharraing mo shúil nó an t-alt “Sink or swim” a foilsíodh ar an mblag sin le déanaí.

Lost in the Delta Quadrant

“Writing a thesis can be a lonely business.” So begins the blurb of the (excellent) Writing Group for PhD Students, which is run by the Academic Writing Centre.

Ha! I wish! I think to myself. Yes, it’s lonely … for my PhD. I’m fine, but my PhD is sitting in the garret, lonely, neglected, in a dusty half-opened box, crying quiet tears of neglect. Yes, I hear it cry, so I try to snatch a few hours here, a few hours there, to go in and meet with it. It has no other friends. Unfortunately, the meetings are so infrequent that we begin by reintroducing ourselves. Continue reading “Lost in the Delta Quadrant”

The known and unforeseen benefits of critical writing groups

I’m doing my PhD through NUI but I’m based in Brooklyn, NY. A number of circumstances dictated my decision to do this and although I initially had reservations about it things have been running smoothly so far. Thankfully I’m pretty self-motivated and disciplined which means that I treat my PhD like a full-time job (with flex-time of course). I also have a fear of falling (side-ways, backwards, flat, whatever and wherever) which means that I take great care in being as organized and structured in my work as I can be.  Continue reading “The known and unforeseen benefits of critical writing groups”

5 Things I Tell My Students (that I should really listen to myself).

We are all guilty of not practising what we preach from time to time, but never am I more aware of this than when I’m passing sage old advice on to my undergraduate students. I preach time management and essay construction, and often think, ‘wow, this stuff is golden.’ Things like:

1. Make a Project Plan, then start todayContinue reading “5 Things I Tell My Students (that I should really listen to myself).”
